Officers of the Homer S. Brown Division of the Allegheny County Bar Association hosted the 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast on Jan. 20 at Mount Ararat Baptist Church, in East Liberty.  The event begin with a buffet breakfast followed by a brief program.

According to Cynthia Moore, chair of the Homer S. Brown Division, “The Homer S. Brown Division is proud to again be hosting this prayer breakfast in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The prayer breakfast provides the opportunity for the members of the community to come together to celebrate Dr. King’s life.”

The Hill House Association received the prestigious Drum Major For Justice Award.  The name of the award originates from one of Dr. King’s final sermons about a eulogy that might be given in the event of his death. Dr. King said, “If you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice.  Say that I was a drum major for peace.  I was a drum major for righteousness.  And all of the other shallow things will not matter.”

The Hill House Association is an independent, nonprofit organization offering a wide range of programs and services to Pittsburgh’s Hill District community and surrounding areas. Through its unique multi-generational service model, dedicated staff and redevelopment efforts, the Hill House continues to positively impact the futures of the residents and communities it serves.

Over the past four decades, it is estimated that the Hill House has provided care and support for more than 500,000 children, adults and seniors living in urban environments.  The Hill House serves clients through five strategic program areas: early learning and child development, youth services, family and workforce development, senior services, and neighborhood services. In addition, the agency offers complementary health and human services to its clients through 10 tenant agencies that reside on the Hill House campus.

According to Nancy Heilman, President of the Allegheny County Bar Association, the Hill House Association is especially deserving of the Drum Major for Justice Award.  “(The) Hill House has provided care and support for hundreds of thousands of children and adults through a variety of programs and services, and continues that mission on a daily basis,” said Heilman.

“The bar association and our Homer S. Brown Division are proud to present this prestigious award to this outstanding organization.”
