AUBURN, Ala. (AP) – The student newspapers at Auburn University and the University of Alabama are both backtracking on things they published after the Iron Bowl.
First, The Crimson-White apologized for an editorial cartoon that mentioned President Obama. Referring to Alabama’s loss to Auburn, the cartoon said: “This is what happens in Obama’s America.”
The paper’s editor issued an apology, saying some people considered the cartoon racist. The statement says the cartoon was only satire.
The Auburn Plainsman issued its own apology Friday for an editorial that referred to some Crimson Tide fans by the derisive nickname “Bammers.”
The paper says the editorial was satire, and it says it didn’t mean to imply that all Alabama fans are extremists.
The Plainsman says it was mistaken for not saying Auburn also has extreme fans.
