Rock legend Lou Reed dead at 71

In this Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 file photo, Lou Reed performs at the Lollapalooza music festival, in Chicago. (AP Photo/John Smierciak, File) by Hillel ItalieAP National Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Lou Reed, the punk poet of rock n’ roll who profoundly influenced generations of musicians as leader of the Velvet Underground and remained a vital solo performer for decades after, died Sunday age 71. Reed died in Southampton, N.Y. of an ailment related to his recent liver transplant, according to his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, who added that Reed had been in frail health for months. Reed shared a home in Southampton with his wife and fellow musician, Laurie Anderson, whom he married in 2008. Reed never approached the commercial success of such superstars as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, but no songwriter to emerge after Dylan so radically expanded the territory of rock lyrics. And no band did more than the Velvet Underground to open rock music to the avant-garde — to experimental theater, art, literature and film, to William Burroughs and Kurt Weill, to John Cage and Andy Warhol, Reed’s early patron.

Game Day Preview: Pittsburgh Steelers at Oakland Raiders

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, right, shakes hands with Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie before an NFL football game in Oakland, Calif., Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013. (AP Photo/Ben Margot) The Steelers find themselves on a mini win streak of two games. They’d love to extend that streak to 3 and keep things rolling. A trip to Oakland is up next and historically the Black and Gold have not fared well there. Being that it’s Halloween week, you can bet the crazies will be out in full force wearing Silver and Black. Will the Steelers have enough in them to put up a third straight win or will history repeat itself?

Obstruction call gives Cards win in WS Game 3

Teammates mob St. Louis Cardinals’ Allen Craig at home after Craig scored the game-winning run on an obstruction call during the ninth inning of Game 3 of baseball’s World Series against the Boston Red Sox Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, in St. Louis. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel) by Ben Walker AP SPorts Writer ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals rushed to the plate to congratulate Allen Craig. The Red Sox stormed home to argue with the umpires. The fans, well, they seemed too startled to know what to do. Who’d ever seen an obstruction call to end a World Series game? No one. In perhaps the wildest finish imaginable, the rare ruling against third baseman Will Middlebrooks allowed Craig to score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning and lifted St. Louis over Boston 5-4 Saturday night for a 2-1 edge. A walk-off win? More like a trip-off.

Polio has not stopped me, I am determined to stop polio

Nigerian para-soccers hold a game outside Lagos, Nigeria (AP Photo/File) COMMENTARY by Misbahu Lawan Didi NIGERIA (CNN) — As a polio survivor, World Polio Day (Oct. 24) is more than a date on the calendar — it’s a reminder that we can and must end this crippling disease. I grew up in the Kano state of Nigeria and contracted polio at age 3. This disease often causes paralysis and left me mostly paralyzed and unable to walk. My brothers had to help me move when we traveled long distances; even traveling to and from school was difficult. Living with polio was not easy when I was younger, but I have found ways to cope and lead an active life. And that has given me a lot of strength. For example, I was very interested in soccer when I was young, and I later went on to found para-soccer, a nationally-recognized soccer-style game for people with disabilities in Nigeria. While polio has not stopped me, I am determined to stop polio.

Arizona women’s players get etiquette training

NIYA BUTTS by Janie McCauleyAP Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — No doubt Arizona’s women’s basketball players are minding their manners. That is just part of the program for the Wildcats. On and off the court, sixth-year coach Niya Butts wants her players to be at their best in all settings and situations. So, the Wildcats visited a restaurant in Tucson for etiquette training again before this season — a lesson one evening at McMahon’s Prime Steakhouse.
