HILL OF HOPE AWARD—Luther Sewell and Roxanne Sewell, with Brenda Tate

On Sept. 28, at the Marriott City Center, the Sixth Annual Hill of Hope Gala was held. Guests enjoyed a lively reception and then walked into a beautifully lit ballroom for an evening dedicated to the Thelma Lovette & Centre Avenue YMCAs.

The theme “Nurturing our Future,” highlighted their efforts to build a healthy, happy and sustainable community across all generations to come. Both Ys together provide over $100,000 in services annually, focusing on programs that perpetuate the Y values of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

This year’s honorary chairs, The Honorable Joseph K. Williams and his wife, Darryl Ford Williams, welcomed the guests and assisted with the award presentation. The 2013 Hill of Hope awardee, Talk Magazine, has been a community jewel for 50 years. Founder Luther J. Sewell Jr., along with his wife, Roxanne, humbly accepted the award.

The Thelma Lovette Community Service award was created to honor a dedicated individual from the community. This year William Blakey received that honor. Blakey recently retired from the Hill House Association after devoting 65 years of community service. After remarks from President & CEO Rig Riggins, of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, guests enjoyed dancing to the sounds of Southern Comfort.

Brenda Tate and Kimberly Slater-Wood served as Hill of Hope Gala co-chairs.
