One of the highlights of the Challenge To African American Women presented by Bev Smith was the “Bev Smith Marketplace.” On Aug. 28-31 the four-day conference was in full swing. But any conference veteran knows that a good conference is about the shopping. Attendees who travel from out of state are always looking for something different and unique to take back home.

In a beautiful ballroom with views of the city and Point State Park, the vendors were selling their wares.  The community vendors included: Marsha Bowman, Traci Lynn Fashion Jewelry; Rayna Carter, Sabika Jewelry; Lillian Wright, Lil’ Bit of Karma, Artistic Jewelry Designs; and Celeta Hickman. There was intriguing art work and a most interesting vendor, Happy Heads, that featured painting for your shaved head, an interesting concept that could be worn during chemo therapy, alopecia or for the daring and confident fashionista. There were corporate vendors as well with information about your money, your health and your life.

Smith says the Marketplace afforded vendors the opportunity to display their specialty and artistic creations and the ability to compete for recognition to a wide variety of customers at a reasonable price.  Many guests from out of the city were pleased to visit new merchants and carry back a piece of Pittsburgh to their hometown.
