Out & About 7-31-13

This group of young ladies really knows how to get their party on for the weekend. This week I visited Local 249 Teamster Hall in Lawrenceville, Savoy Restaurant in the Strip District, Harambee Festival in Homewood, Red Onion in the Hill District and Ava Lounge in East Liberty. My first stop was at Savoy Restaurant in the Strip District where everyone came out for Happy Hour and had great food and drinks.

Burgess works to improve community-police relations

REV. RICKY BURGESS In the wake of the verdict in the Trayvon Martin murder trial, Pittsburgh’s Black community is channeling its outrage into efforts to reduce racial profiling and police brutality. With this in my mind, District 6 Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess proposed legislation last week to improve police-community relations. “The relationship between the community and the police is at crisis level,” Burgess said. “On one side you have the police who believe the community hates them, the community disrespects them, the community is complacent in illegal activity. On the other side you have the community who believe the police hate them, the police disrespect them.”

Pirates drill Cardinals 6-0 to sweep doubleheader

Pittsburgh Pirates’ Pedro Alvarez (24) drives in a run with a double off St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Lance Lynn during the first inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh Tuesday, July 30, 2013. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar) PITTSBURGH (AP) — Forget about the best record in baseball, the lead in the NL Central and the buzz of a city giddily envisioning the end of two decades of despair. After a euphoric doubleheader sweep of reeling St. Louis on Tuesday that propelled them to the top of the division, the Pittsburgh Pirates — yes, the Pirates — are ready to get greedy. “We want more,” manager Clint Hurdle said.

This Week In Black History 7-31-13

For the Week of july 31-August 6 July 31 1874—Father Patrick Francis Healy becomes the first Black president of a major White university when he is inaugurated on this day as president of Georgetown University. Healy was also the first African-American to earn a PhD. However, racial prejudice forced him to earn his degree in Europe not the United States. Healy was born in Macon, Ga., in 1834 to a Black slave woman and a White plantation owner who decided to acknowledge his five bi-racial children. They were all sent north to be educated. Although some felt he could have passed for White, Healy openly acknowledged his African ancestry. Healy died in 1910.

OVERTIME 7-31

BILL NEAL :10 At the time of this writing, I’ve got the Pirates taking 2 out of 5 from the St. Louis Cards. But before you take that to the bank, you should know that I thought for sure the Titanic would return no problem. And yes, I had Gen. Custard winning at Little Big Horn, but who knew there would be so many Indians and for the last time…The Spurs had it won in six games. I know it, you know it and Fred Crawford knows it! :09 You Got A Better Memory Than This? It’s a hot summer day…about 84 degrees in the shade…it’s you and your lady and you’re on your way to your boy’s cookout and his mom is cookin’ so you know the food will be all that…your hand is on your girl’s leg and you know that you belong to each other and only each other …the top is down and then this comes on…“Hearts of fire creates love desire, take you high and higher to the world you belong, hearts of fire creates love desire, high and higher to your place on the throne…That’s the way of the world.”
