On July 6, at a most appropriate location, The Syria Shrine Center in Cheswick, a historic event was held. Sahara Temple No. 2 and Sahara Court No. 9 presented the First Joint Charity Ball honoring Noble Donald E. Palm, Illustrious Potentate, and Daughter Mary Etta Johnson, Illustrious Commandress. Their intent is to make this an annual event.

The charitable recipient of the ball was the Sickle Cell Foundation, the foundation CEO, Nettie Hollis was on hand to say thank you and congratulate the groups for their efforts. Noble and Chief Rabban Marlin Metz welcomed the crowd and spoke about the significance of the evening, it being the first time in Shriners’ history heads and representatives of various Shriners’ sects came together to celebrate Shrinedom.

The host temple, Sahara Temple No. 2, received Syria Shriners, the Prince Hall Grand Lodge, the Hiram Grand Lodge and   Shriners. Shriners from Ohio, Philadelphia, Florida, California, West Virginia, and New Jersey came to participate in a historical event that in the past has been frowned upon.  Event chairs, Metz and Rosalie Jones Moore, were awarded proclamations from the city of Pittsburgh for this historic event.

Shrinedom is thought of as a fraternal, social and charitable organization: fraternal in the sense of using passwords and symbols to remind the members to ever strive for inner self-improvement; social from the standpoint of the enjoyment of good times within its own ranks; and charitable for its unselfish giving of goods and services on both the local and national level.
