LOUIS ‘HOP’ KENDRICK
On June 8 at the Bidwell Presbyterian Church, North Side from 8-11 a.m., the Western Pennsylvania Black Political Assembly will officially celebrate their 10th anniversary. They will recognize 10 people who are demonstrating by their sense of concern, caring, commitment and actions that they epitomize that which the WPBPA is founded upon. The Assembly’s co-conveners, Rev. Thomas Smith and Richard M. Adams, will present the awards.
The awardees are Brandi Fisher, Alma Fox, Chris Moore, Clifton Pitts, The Hon. William “Bill” Robinson, William “Jack” Simmons, Marcia M. Sturdivant, William E. Strickland, Bernadette Turner and Arletta Scott Williams. The guest speaker will be Pastor Emeritus of Grace Memorial Church Rev. Johnnie Monroe.
I have known people who belong to as many as 30 organizations, but I have never been a joiner of organizations for a number of reasons. In fact, I am an active member of two organizations, New Destiny Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the Western Pennsylvania Black Political Assembly. One of the main reasons I belong to these two organizations is a common denominator, both have long range plans to move Blacks upward and to help position us to be full participants in the American Dream.
It goes without saying that there are those of you who ask the question why those 10 instead of you or me? I really could simplify my answer by saying why not these 10, but I won’t do that. In the year 2023 we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary and maybe we will be honoring 20 people and some of you will be among the 20.
This week’s column provides me with the opportunity to publically thank all of the awardees.
