Pittsburgh National College Fair

FEB. 8—The National Association for College Admission Counseling will host its Pittsburgh National College Fair from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, 1000 Fort Duquesne Blvd., Downtown. Representatives from more than 300 colleges and universities will be on hand to meet with students and parents about academics, student life, athletics, scholarships, financial aid and more. There will also be a session from 6-9 p.m. and on Feb. 9 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Registration is requested. Father/Daughter Dinner Dance

FEB. 10—Allegheny Family Network and Providence Family Support Center will host a Father/Daughter Dinner Dance from 6:30-9 p.m. at Brighton Rd., North Side. There will be fun, food and dancing. Registration is required. For more information, call Chris Rather at 412-246-2030 ext. 152.

CPR/AED training

FEB. 11—West Penn Allegheny Health System’s STAR and CCAC’S Public Safety Institute will host a Heartsaver CPR and AED Training from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the STAR Center, 4900 Friendship Ave., Bloomfield. Courses are free and completion cards will be given out. For more information, call 412-578-5476.

Town hall meeting

FEB. 11—Community Empowerment Association will host a Call to Action Town Hall Meeting on Educating Black Children from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Pittsburgh Obama School, 129 Denniston Ave., East Liberty. The theme is “Whose Educating Our Black Children? ‘The Culture of Silence.’” There will be a panel discussion and workshop sessions. For more information, call 412-371-3689.

Black History Celebration

FEB. 11—The Hill District Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Black History Month Celebration at 2177 Centre Ave., Hill District. There will be a Black History Bowl at 1 p.m. for ages 6 and up. There will also be a Taste Off: Best Sweet Potato Pie on the Hill competition on Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. and on Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. a Book Talk and Signing with the authors of “August Wilson: Pittsburgh Places in His Life and Plays,” Laurence Glasco and Christopher Rawson. Democratic committee endorsements

FEB. 12—The Allegheny County Democratic Committee will host its Endorsements from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the IBEW #5, 5 Hot Metal St., South Side. This is an opportunity for candidates running in the April Primary to seek the committee’s endorsements. Endorsements will be held for the offices of US Congress, Pennsylvania Senate and Pennsylvania General Assembly. For more information, call 412-481-5646.

General/executive meeting

Black History Program

FEB. 19—The McKeesport Heritage Center will host its annual Black History Program at 2:30 p.m. at 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. Guest speaker Dr. Laurence Glasco, of the University of Pittsburgh, will present a program on the images of legendary photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris. For more information, call 412-678-1832.

Youth nominations

ONGOING—Kohl’s Department Store is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program at http://www.kohlskids.com. This is to honor kids, ages 6-18, who have made a positive impact on their communities. More than 2,200 young volunteers will receive scholarships and prizes. Nominations must be made by individuals 21 years old and will be accepted through March 15. For more information, visit http://www.kohlskids.com.

Tax preparations

ONGOING—Just Harvest will offer Free Tax Preparation at the Bedford Hope Center, 2305 Bedford Ave., Hill District. This free service is for families with incomes up to $40,000 or individuals with an income up to $20,000. The service will also be offered at their South Side location and the Monroeville CCAC campus. Preparations will be available through April 17.
