(NNPA)—Filming of Tyler Perry’s new movie, “The Marriage Counselor” began only recently, but fans are already threatening to stay away, angry over the director’s casting of reality TV star Kim Kardashian for a role in the film.
According to The Huffington Post, fans have used Perry’s website to criticize his choice for the role of Ava, coworker and friend of the titular marriage counselor Judith (Jurnee Smollett) in the movie.

“Mr. Perry as much as we the middle class Black folks love u, I have made my mind up on your next movie. Me and my wife and children will NOT be supporting you on this one. You are way too classy to have this un-talented lady named Kim Kardashian in your film. … All the Black actresses out there needing work and you choose this negative person. How sad. And what a slap in our face as Black people,” one fan wrote, according to the Post.
“Please remove Kim K from the cast. I will not support you casting this **#&$#& in your film,” another reportedly wrote.
Perry explained his casting choice of Kardashian in a letter to fans, asking people to hear his side.
“After I finished writing this movie, I sat back and re-read it,” he wrote in the letter. “Halfway through my read, the gravity of what I had written hit me. I knew that this message was not only for my age group, but for all audiences, especially the youth.
“I wanted a younger cast, that’s why I put Jurnee in the lead and invited Lance Gross, Robbie Jones and Brandy,” he continued. “About two months ago, long before I even heard about Kim’s marriage or divorce, I was trying to finish up the casting. I said to one of my producers, ‘Who else is out there that young people are looking up to?’ One of my producers showed me pictures that his daughter had taken of several hundred kids lined up around the corner to get into a Kardashian store. They wanted to meet Kim. I thought, what better person! She literally has millions of young people following her. I thought and still do think, that it would be very responsible of her to be a part of this film. To have the young people that look up to her, see her in a film that is about what happens in life when you make the wrong choices.
In his letter, Perry said he explained his reasoning to a complaining fan, who understood and said she supported his inclusion of Kardashian. He hopes that others will be able to come around as well, because he will not make any changes to the cast. Kardashian, according to Us Weekly, is on the movie’s set and working.
