Don’t fail to be thankful

This week’s column will focus on complete positiveness. My birthday is Nov. 26 and my Lord promised me three score plus 10 and I assure you I have exceeded that. The news has story after story about the number of Blacks incarcerated, and percentage-wise it is highly disturbing, but we should be thankful for the overwhelming majority of Blacks who have never been arrested.

Those who would highlight the negative statistics that focus on the numbers of Black males who drop out of high school, we must reverse those horrific statistics. However we should be thankful that the numbers of Black males in advance education is at an all time high.

There are statistics after statistics that focus on young female single parents but too little focus is on those programs that have helped them become a loving responsible parent.

Blacks have too often been portrayed in a positive light only when they are a sports figure, but we should be thankful that Blacks—male and female alike in today’s society—occupy office in the presidency, governor, U.S. Senator, congress, mayors, district attorney and other elected positions.

We should be thankful to have had such a God fearing man in our city, neighborhood and our lives in the presence of Robert “Bob” Lavelle.

We should be thankful for the existence of the Pittsburgh Courier and the current New Pittsburgh Courier still informing readers of positive Black accomplishments for more than 100 years.

We must be thankful for our loving parents, grandparents and other family members who oft times had very limited education and financial resources, but make the sacrifices to educate their family members.

As disillusioned as we may be in the Black communities we must still be thankful for those select few, who still speak up and out for Black people.

We must be thankful for those Black women who refused to allow themselves to be victimized by a double standards that would block them from achieving their life’s dream.

Please remember the Kingsley Association.
