What do you think should happen to the site of the Civic/Mellon arena?

There was a recent vote by the SEA board to demolish the old Civic/Mellon Arena. Some are fighting this so we asked Hill District residents what they thought should be at this location. Here’s what you said.

“It should be preserved. It’s a local landmark and has been there since the ’50s. They should figure out another use and not tear it down. Whatever happens with it, the city will probably make money without any benefit to the community.”

“They should make it something for the community, for example, a mall that is convenient. It would be easy to get to for people from the community. They can put some things for the kids in there.”

“I’d like to see it stay. It’s a part of history and has been there before Three Rivers Stadium. It’ll cost millions more to tear it down. Why not save it? It’ll be the first indoor mall with a retractable roof.”

“I think they should redevelop it. We need housing, grocery stores and other things for the community. We don’t have anything. We can’t get to what is available in other areas because they stopped the transportation. It needs to be something useful for the community.”

“The city should make it something like a theater. They should have similar events to what they had in the past and use it when the Consol Center is busy.”

“It’s a historical monument and I was there when it was built. They should turn it into something positive for the urban community, like a job center. So much of the Hill was destroyed to make it and I think it should be used for the betterment of the community.”
