High level lucrative hustling

(NNPA)—It is always somewhat amusing to watch Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton hustle the Democratic Party. They appear like magic at any event even remotely connected to race and issue declarations, proclamations and platitudes denouncing whoever was responsible and predicting havoc if something isn’t done about it. Usually, the something being done ended in goodies for Brother Jesse, and Brother Al and some of their posse. Well, it is now obvious that the two rhetorical warriors are rank amateurs compared to the Black crew now hustling the Republican Party. One can only observe in awe as Larry Elder, Gregory Kane, Walter Williams and their cohorts hustle the Republicans. When reading some of the stuff they write in their columns, it is obvious that they know exactly what their White supporters want to read.

The Sound Machine from ‘Police Academy’… Iconic comedian brings unique one-man show to city

Awesome is the only word that can be used to describe comedian Michael Winslow’s show at the Pittsburgh Improv. Winslow, who caught the attention of viewers as the kooky Larvelle “Motor Mouth” Jones in the “Police Academy” franchise, proved that he is a well-rounded performer who enjoys sharing his unique talent for voice impressions with audiences around the world. MICHAEL WINSLOW Winslow’s first television appearance was on the “Gong Show” where he did spot-on sound effects of Benji the movie dog, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.”

Out & About with Brotha Ash

This week I visited the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Downtown Pittsburgh, Ammons Recreation Center in the Hill District, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts in Shadyside, Mellon Park in East Liberty and the Shadow Lounge in East Liberty. My first stop was at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture where 360 Entertainment presented the first Pittsburgh Citywide Talent Show. There is a lot of talent in the city and I have to congratulate all of the contestants. Congratulations to E-Young who won the big prize from 360 Entertainment. The Shadow Lounge was in full effect at Gene Stovall’s event.

Is it wise to use credit card to generate airline miles?

Is it wise to use a credit card to generate airline miles? At a leadership conference this past week someone was telling me to get a Capital One credit card for my business. She said when you place your orders and pay with the credit card and then right after that pay your card off immediately online, she said the Capital One card gives you credit and you can get free airline tickets. This way I don’t have to pay for airfare for national conference and leadership conference. Is this a good idea or is it insane? Signed—Female seeking to make good financial decisions

Business founder fitness

(NNPA)—Today, we see an entire generation of new young leaders and entrepreneurs alike struggling to make an impact. This is the age of social networking with Facebook, Twitter, Google and mobile technologies enabling people to connect with millions in geographically dispersed locations worldwide. Enterprises from home-based startups to youth club ventures to Fortune 500 companies are restructuring workforce and productivity models using efficient collaborative network tools. Whatever your profession, you will never be able to stand idle or be underutilized. Dynamism is the new catchword and anyone who deals with the problem of constant upward mobility needs requires being “fit” to keep up. It isn’t enough to be merely “good” at one’s work, field, or trade, one requires excelling to make the difference. To do so, one has to be totally up-to-date with the latest that is happening in one’s chosen field.

Jets take field for camp without Revis

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP)—Super Bowl or bust? Well, the New York Jets’ big hopes might hinge upon the one player not at training camp. And, unless a major resolution occurs soon, it could be a while before they see former Aliquippa and Pitt star Darrelle Revis on the field. The All-Pro cornerback sat out the first practice of camp Aug. 2, locked in a contract dispute. “We’ve got to get who we have ready to go,” coach Rex Ryan said. “If Darrelle’s not here, then we’re going to move on. We won’t make excuses. We think we’ll have a great defense anyway, and I know we will. It’s just a lot easier if Revis is out there.” DARRELLE REVIS

Rookie cap could bring balance to NFL salaries

by Tim DahlbergAP Sports Columnist Sam Bradford is coming off of shoulder surgery, and has never taken a snap in the NFL. Yet the No. 1 draft pick managed to get the St. Louis Rams to guarantee him $50 million and a possible $78 million over six years. Tom Brady hasn’t had as much luck so far at the bargaining table with the New England Patriots. And that’s despite three Super Bowl wins, a proven arm, and an uncanny ability to complete a pass when it means the most.

Inside Conditions…Training wheels

It is that time of year, ladies and gents. What time is it? Well as if you didn’t know, it does not snow in August and if you lose your afro pick, just make a few “twisties” and grow some dreads. It’s make ’em, or break ’em time at Steelers training camp now in full swing at St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe. Sometimes heat, coupled with stress, may occasionally cause temporary insanity but usually a Valium or Prozac washed down with a forty of Old “E” will cure all that ails ya; but has Mike Tomlin lost his “fro” comb along with the split ends and the brain matter located beneath?

Was it worth it?

Get out of debt guru Dave Ramsey was famous for recommending people who were in deep debt to get a part time job delivering pizza. With the most recent rash of pizza driver holdups it doesn’t sound like a good idea. Am I watching too much television? I must be. I’m watching the old shows where crooks planned out the crime and went for large rewards like the Mona Lisa, all of the diamonds in the jewelry store or the money in the cash delivery truck. What are you going to do with a pizza, a 2-liter and maybe a few 20s?

Hawaiian Bash

Aloha was the greeting on June 20 at the Hosanna House Sherwood Property as Leah Thomas greeted guests for her Hawaiian Bash. The calendar said it was Father’s Day but it was also a time to celebrate Thomas’ birthday. LEAH CELEBRATES WITH FAMILY—From left: Matthew Thomas, father; Rose Anne Thomas, mother; Leah and Mark Thomas, brother. Guests were invited to wear their best island wear. Leah’s friends gave each person a lei and special friends received a lei made of real orchards. For many this was a first to see and feel a real lei. Thomas wore a lei and a head lei of plumeria flowers on her head. The plumeria is a tropical flower and nothing says Hawaii like the plumeria.
