Record keeping

SEPT. 10—The Saint Vincent College Small Business Development Center will host a “Record Keeping and Tax Requirements for Small Business” workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe. Gary Breckly, of Gary W. Breckly and Associates, will lead this seminar on how one can learn how to avoid tax problems like back-taxes and penalties, and also the correct ways to manage one’s recordkeeping system. He will also discuss how to avoid mistakes many business owners make when preparing records, what type of records one will need to keep for taxes and auditing, recordkeeping requirements for compliance with Sales and Use Tax laws, and more. Business tax deductions, taxpayer services, taxpayer ID numbers, employee withholding, payroll tax requirements and withholding, sales tax responsibility and illustrations of good record keeping systems will also be discussed. Business series

SEPT. 10—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series from 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown and Business branch, 612 Smithfield St. The topic is “The Convincing Cover Letter: Get it Read. Get an Interview.” Karen Litzinger of Litzinger Career Counseling, will present this workshop. She will review both the content and format of convincing cover letters and suggest places to send them to expand your job search. In this lively session, she’ll also talk about other related correspondence, including networking, thank you notes and offer letters. This event is free and open to the public. Professional networking

SEPT. 10—Jessica Lee will host “Entrepreneurial Thursdays” from 5:30-8 p.m. at Little E’s, 949 Liberty Ave., Downtown. This is a professional networking event with live jazz/R&B music. This week’s theme is “Surviving & Thriving in a Flat World Economy.” There is a $10 cover charge with a full bar and dinner selections. Business casual is the attire. No jeans or tennis shoes. Breakfast series

SEPT. 11—The Chatham University Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship will host the Women’s Business Leaders Breakfast Series from 7-9 a.m. at the James Laughlin Music Hall, Chatham University, Woodland Road, Shadyside. The series will feature prominent women business leaders from the greater Pittsburgh region. Networking and a continental breakfast will precede a presentation on such topics as marketing, financing, social media, negotiation, sustainability and innovation. The speaker will be Susan Everingham, director of RAND Corp. Registration is required and the cost is $25, which includes breakfast and presentations. SEPT. 12—SCORE will host their Small Business Workshop from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at DeVry University, 210 Sixth Ave., Downtown. This highly interactive workshop is geared to aspiring and existing small business entrepreneurs. Business professionals cover the topics of small business planning, recordkeeping, taxes, financing, marketing and legal aspects. The cost is $45 and registration is requested.
